HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
We met in Sunday School at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church. Our grandmothers were right–go to church and meet your spouse! We were both new in Birmingham and were looking for a church to get plugged into. He joined Dawson, I joined a week or two later. We became friends and started dating a few months later. We went to Waffle House after a friend’s birthday party, and the rest is history.
THE PROPOSAL
He proposed in front of Dawson–where we met, where he proposed and where we would eventually get married. He told me we were going to eat dinner at Gianmarco’s with friends–there is a running joke about me having never been to Gianmarco’s despite really wanting to go. Because the restaurant’s parking lot is so small, we were going to meet at Dawson and carpool. Andrew proposed at the bottom of the steps and surprised me with an engagement party hosted at my favorite bookstore–Little Professor.
PREPARING FOR MARRIAGE
We attended Dawson’s Together for Life Class–it’s a 12-week course hosted at Dawson that teaches engaged and newly married couples really pragmatic advice for what’s to come in marriage. We also did premarital counseling with our pastor, Dr. David Eldridge, who later married us.
WEDDING MOMENTS
I still get emotional when I think about our ceremony, walking up to the front of the church and realizing we were truly surrounded by all of our favorite people at one time (we had a decently large bridal party). Also, at the reception, we paid homage to my hometown of Mobile, Alabama, and threw out Mardi Gras beads and moon pies.
